Plein Air Painting at Crystal Cove Beach Cottages

Recently, I went to Crystal Cove State Park with my cigar box easel to paint on location-
I intended to paint a nice plein air piece of one of the cottages from the sand at the Crystal Cove Beach Cottages Historical District. However, on arrival, I discovered the rest of Southern California had also decided to spend their day on the sand at Crystal Cove.
The masses and their umbrellas were all that were visible from the sand. I relocated to the "Beaches Cottage" (from the Bette Midler movie "Beaches") and setup to paint on the front deck. The amount of people and their colorful umbrellas were so lively and colorful (and a bit comical) so I attempted to capture that energy on canvas...
A quick sketch, working out the composition...
The sun comes out, the tide comes up.
Capturing the colors of the sunlit waves, sand, and sunbathers.
Resulting work capturing the playful energy of the day painted "en plein aire".
